"Skip Pessl delivers a vivid on-the-ground account of northern canoe adventure, from a time before GPS, composite boats, sat phones, and expedition blogs. His riveting day-by-day chronicle fires up the youthful exhilaration and fierce joy of traditional expedition life in the Far North. It also reveals, with refreshing honesty and humility, the fear and tragedy survived by the Moffatt party. Pessl brings a lifetime of contemplation to bear in his analysis of that awful, mortal moment on the cold river, far from help. Essential reading for those who warm to the flame of northern adventure."--Alan Kesselheim, author of Let Them PaddleSkip Pessl delivers a vivid on-the-ground account of northern canoe adventure, from a time before GPS, composite boats, sat phones, and expedition blogs. Skip s recount focuses on reality and evidence, not on personal opinion or mythology. To repeat, this new book is needed and sincerely welcome. G. J. This is an account, based mainly on the journal of the author and one other member to the party, of an early recreational canoe trip through the Barren Grounds of northern Canada. Art Moffatt, the leader of the trip, was intent on making a motion picture of the expedition to show the change in vegetation as one progressed north through the forest and then out into the barren grounds. He was accompanied by five college students, including Skip Pessl. They had neither the modern equipment which we now use, nor a knowledge of the severity of the weather of that region after mid-August. Consequently they lagged on the river until mid-September, when the weather became treacherously cold. Trying to make better time toward their destination at the village of Baker Lake, they ran some rapids without adequately scouting them. in one of which two of the canoes capsized, and though all made it to shore, but Art Moffatt died of hypothermia. The book tells how the remaining five made it to Baker Lake and eventually to home.Art Moffat's body was recovered from the place where the remaining five had set it on a hilltop under his canoe, together with his exposed film. Some years ago I visited Moffatt's grave in the cemetery above Baker Lake, and recently I had the pleasure of talking to Skip Pessl and seeing his showing of what there is of Moffatt's film. Just as for me and many others, a canoe trip through one of the world's last remaining wildernesses was a life-changing experience for Skip. You should read his book.
excellent and exciting read! I love man vs nature stories such as The Endurance so I was excited to read this even though I am not a canoeist. It was a quick read because I couldn't put it down. Skip Pessl is a great writer and I loved the journal excerpts and even the recipes of Johhny cake and the old supply lists from the 50's complete with costs in those days for travel and equipment. They saw the area as it was when it was mostly untouched by modern man and there are great descriptions of meeting native Indians and the wildlife they saw. But the reason you can't put it down is knowing the struggles they are going to face and the first person accounts of these young men fighting for their life as winter is fast approaching, they are running out of food, have lost their leader and must find a way out of the tundra on their own. Really gripping survival story, I highly recommend it!
Great book about a truly challenging adventure.
this is a really interesting book, a real life adventure that reads like a Jack London novel .determined young men are confronted with a unexpected tragedy having to test there survival skillsunder the harshest conditions. There will to survive and comradely prevail.
Any lover of outdoor adventure will be unable to put Barren Grounds down. The reader will experience firsthand the discomforts, the triumphs and the tragedies undergone by this brave group of travelers.
